The South Coast of Dar es Salaam

...and the place that grew around it.

Our Story

What began in the 1970s as a family home and escape to the sea has grown, slowly, into what it is today. And remained, at its core, exactly what it had always been. A place to leave the city. To be by the sea. To spend time together. To land, pause and simply be.

At the time, this stretch of coast was quieter — less visited, less built, still largely left to itself.

Kipepeo was never planned as something larger. But it was used, lived in, loved and returned to. And over time, it opened to others looking for the same thing.

Carefully, slowly, and without losing what mattersSince 1999…

It started as a campsite in 1999, a patch of ground close to the shore where travellers moving through could pitch a tent. The beach huts came next, followed by the chalets in 2002. Then, most recently, the hotel rooms and apartments — designed with more care and comfort than what came before.

The south coast is growing and Kigamboni is increasingly connected to the city. Kipepeo is growing with it — carefully, slowly, and without losing what has always mattered: honest hospitality by the sea.

The name came from the shoreline.Kipepeo

Kipepeo means butterfly in Kiswahili. But it was not chosen abstractly. It came from something specific and true about this particular stretch of beach.

Small, bright coquina shells scatter the sand here, washed in by the tide, gathered in quiet clusters along the water’s edge. When you find one intact, the two halves spread like wings — purple, orange, pink, yellow. They are how the place got its name. Fleeting. Recurring. Always returning with the tide.

The guests who find Kipepeo tend to arrive the same way. From different journeys. For different lengths of time. Some briefly. Some longer than they planned. Some season after season. The place holds open space for all of it.

Twenty-five years of a place being lovedWhat we believe

Twenty-five years of a place being loved — by the people who built it, the people who work in it, and the people who keep returning to it. Not a policy. Not a mission statement. A set of things that have always been true about Kipepeo, whether or not anyone wrote them down. We wrote them down.

An honest reset.A reliable exhale.

Come for the afternoon, stay a night, or return season after season. Kipepeo is here when you are ready.
